Gesar in Darfur
The harsh and cruel conditions in Dalfur are known to all of us who read the news and hear the heart wrenching reports that regularly appear telling us of mutilation, rape and murder.
One person very close to us, decided she had heard and read enough and was going to do something to assist the children who suffered regularly the most aweful abuse.
Our dear friend and Ambassador of the Gesar Foundation Kara Green has raised four hundred and fifty pounds to buy forty five solar cookers and this is only the beginning. Read through to the bottom of the page to see how the sum raised has increased.
Below we see Kara in Red and holding her youngest son while in concersation with Jackie Stone. The picture was taken at a Gesar gathering ambassadors...
The actions of kara Green are truly meaningful for the children, as it was often they who had the terrifying task to leave their camp and collect the fire wood that is necessary for the cooking fires.
Already living in camps due to having fled their homes and often not knowing where their parents are, they were open to be raped and murdered.
It is difficult for us in our surroundings, to know what life under these conditions must be like but heavy with her second child, kara set out to help in whatever way she could.
Below is a letter that kara wrote to all of us. Please read it!
Solar cooker project Darfur
In September our book club read The Translator by Daoud Hari, a tribesman from Darfur. It was harrowing reading yet also incredibly inspiring. I challenge anyone to read it and not feel moved to do something to help the people of Darfur.
I was particularly disturbed by the stories of children as young as 6 years of age being raped over and over again, day after day, mutilation and murder are commonplace as they leave the safety of their camps to collect firewood for cooking.
When one is told of such appalling suffering it puts our lives into perspective. For me it’s like a jolt direct to my heart that shocks me back into reality and out of my safe comfort zone of material wealth, health and protection. Thankfully there are people who care enough to do something, not just sit back and say “How sad” and then move on, but to really get off their backsides and change things, OK it may only be for a handful of people at a time but we have to start somewhere.
The Gesar Foundation is totally dedicated to ending the suffering of children all over the world. Obviously it doesn’t happen overnight, but if we all pull together and genuinely work for the benefit of those who need our help we can’t fail to make a difference.
In September I held a Pampered Chef fundraising evening at West Hill Village Hall, Ottery St Mary, in Devon with the fabulous support of Debbie Kerr, and we raised £450 for the children of Darfur.
I am delighted to have discovered a solar cooker project, “Solarclutch”, run by Stephen Harrigan who works for the Darfur Peace and Development Organisation. If women and children can use the natural power of the sun to cook their meals then they don’t need to leave the safety of their camp to collect firewood.
Steve has developed a new solar cooker, which uses recycled plastic and lasts 5 times longer than the original cardboard ones. He and his team from Fort Wayne, Indiana have shipped out 2 batches already.
The £450 we have raised through Gesar will go towards the 3rd shipment. Please see photos attached. Check out the cookers at www.solarclutch.com
On behalf of Gesar and the children of Darfur I would like to thank everyone who supported us by donating, attending and offering raffle prizes.
My next project is a black tie do “Dinner for Darfur” in East Devon in October 2009. I’ll keep you posted.
From the bottom of my heart thanks again to all of you, and to Gesar for raising awareness and making a difference to the lives of children all over the world. I feel honoured to be a small part of it.
With love, light and sparkle
Kara
Kara has sent the money raised ,directly to Stephen Harrigan who makes and transports the solar cookers to the needy at ten pounds each.
How wonderful must this man be? Follow the links below and see his workshop and set up.
Kara has now successfully held her second fund raising event. See below for details and read the mail sent to us by kara.
Darling Pawo
What fabulous news I have for you! I'm so excited, I've gone from jumping with joy to crying at the generosity of people.
I held another fundraiser for the children of Darfur on Thursday. A couple of people had told me not to expect as much as last year due to the recession but we smashed it!! hee hee.
I wrote a piece for the local paper and managed to get a double page spread in with a pic of Marley and I cooking and some photos of the Darfuri women using the cookers, and I've been incredibly moved by the conversations I've had with people on the phone as a result, not to mention the cheques they've sent! Wonderful, totally wonderful.
We held a raffle on the night, charged for tickets, sold books and got a couple of stalls together as well as the main cookery demo entertainment..and guess what Pawo? £525 and it's still trickling in!!! Hee Hee! You can probably see me smiling over the internet! I think one of the most touching things for me was two young boys, Charles and William Amos, I think they are about 8 and 10yrs old, both donated their £6 pocket money each that they had saved up because they had heard about the suffering of the children in Africa and felt they wanted to do something to help them. How beautiful. Oh don't you just love life?!
As we did last year I'll pay in one cheque first now as we will have to wait for the remainder from the Pampered Chef company which will be a cheque direct to the Gesar Foundation, that will prob come in January.
Terry Emerson is an angel, we spoke on the phone and she was incredibly generous with her donation. We hope to meet one day.
The biggest thanks goes to Paul and Jacky - Wow, what a couple! Thank you for introducing us. They came armed with raffle prizes, a beautifully cooked Christmas cake, thanks to Paul, Jacky's sister Yvonne made 40 mince pies! they were amazing, very unassuming and modest and spent the whole evening inthe kitchen. They obviously think the world of you, as we all do. Lovely. Will connect with Corinne too, am thinking of Romania and medical supplies connections...anyway...
Have made contact with Jaden, he has a lot of contacts, so thank you again for introducing us. He sounds lovely.
We are all well, recovering after being poorly. Marley and I have had pleurisy which was nasty, but we're all good now. I'm doing my Reiki healing course which is fabulous. Plodding away with my book. Going to approach Prince Charles as he's championing the Rainforest as his cause and that's what my children's book is about, well, why not aim for the top?!! What am I like?
Well, must go, need to spend some time with my poor husband - think he's feeling a bit neglected!
the biggest love in the world to you, light and sparkle as always my special special friend. I do adore you. Kara xxx Big cuddles from Marley and Darwin. Come and see us soon xxxx
It is wonderful to witness first hand the work of humanitarians. Kara Green is a fine and valued Ambassadors to the Gesar Foundation.
Bless her.
Below we have a picture of Jacky and Paul Stone who were so much help to kara. Do not be alarmed. Paul insist he entertain the local children on Halloween. Since this photograph was taken, Jackie and Paul, much inspired by Kara joined forces with Corina Cattemull and are now serving children in Romania with much needed nappies..
Below are our aspirations for Darfur
We look forward to the day, when The Friends Of Gesar are able to present the people of Darfur with Wish Fulfilling Tree, the painting. It will be displayed in pride of place for the nation to see. It will be protected as a national treasure and recognised as an international badge of honour synonymous of great achievement.
Wish Fulfilling Tree, the rousing Music Anthem, has it's silent representation in Wish Fulfilling Tree the painting. When the sound of war has gone, may silence resignate in the happiness of children for as long as space exist.
The Gesar Foundation seek musicians from Darfur who will record Wish Fulfilling Tree for the children of their home land.
May this recording be made and may countless beings benefit from the suggestion.
See below photographs that show clearly just how the work of kara Green has made a distict difference to the lives of so many. Thank you kara for your hard work, kindness and generosity...
